Ultimate Direction Luna Pack:

Ultimate Direction has been leading the way in hydration equipment for many years. I recently had the opportunity to test the Luna, a women’s specific daypack. As a runner and cyclist, hydration is extremely important to me. I found that the Luna provides ample amounts of water capacity (64 ounces). The Luna also provides plenty of storage room, which is convenient for those of us who sweat a lot and prefer to change our clothes before we go out to eat. I could fit an entire extra set of clothes as well as some power bars and GU in the storage area of the pack without any problems.

I found the Luna easy to use; the technology that is built around the bladder was awesome. The “screamer valve” at the end of the tube made getting water into my mouth effortless. Also, the tube that carries the water to the valve is a perfect size gauge. Not too big and not too small (important for all women). I did not find myself sucking for extra water or slowing down because of an overflow. The bladder itself was completely leak proof and simple to fill up as well as clean. This brings me to one aspect that I took for granted, the fact that I did not have to reach for a water bottle, but instead grab a straw that was already situated within inches of my mouth made for not only an easier situation but also a safer one.

Since the Luna was designed specifically for a woman, I decided to compare it to my other Ultimate Direction pack, the Stinger, which is considered unisex. I did notice that the fit of the Luna seemed to be a little more comfortable since it sat on my hips instead of my lower back which relieved a lot of stress from my back. The harness also fit much better around my chest. It felt narrower than the Stinger through the shoulders and it also seemed to take into account that most women have a chest to deal with. I took the pack on several rides and trail runs and noticed that it stayed on my hips and shoulders instead of slipping down my shoulders, which my other pack does unless I cinch it down tightly.

I would have no hesitation recommending the Luna to someone who is planning a day hike, going mountain biking or on a long trail run. It is comfortable and extremely easy to use. However, it is a big pack to have to carry for shorter activities. While riding the roads or going on shorter trail runs, I would prefer something smaller and less cumbersome. Ultimate Direction does offer a couple of waist belts in a smaller size.

Aesthetically, the Luna pack looks awesome. It is feminine yet athletic looking with a nice shade of light royal blue and soft slate gray. The padded shoulder straps make this pack easy to carry for long periods of time. The low profile of the pack makes it light and comfortable. Thumbs up for this one.
