Ruff Wear Float Coat:
I remember several years ago while paddling my Kayak with some friends down the Little Beaver, I decided to take the dog. While I was in the kayak, she was in the canoe with a few friends. Man was that a mistake. She would not settle down, jumping from side to side, just a pain. Since for the next five miles we weren't going to cross any roads, I kicked her out and let her run on the bank beside us, after all, that is what she really wanted. After about an hour we it a few rapids, well she decided she then wanted back in the boat and begin to swim out. She ended up getting caught in the current and luckily was washed up onto a log. Holding on for dear life. That left me trying to maneuver my kayak into a rapid, grab the dog, get her onto my spray skirt, without getting clawed to death, and keep us both form drowning. Needless to say we made it. Scary, but we made it.
Well, a K-9 float coat would of made me feel a lot better. The flotation device for a dog is something I never saw until now. Made form 500-denier Cordura Plus construction with a adjustable three point fastening system, and a low-profile handle to assist the dog in demanding situations. The generous, ergonomic cut allows a full range of motion for unencumbered running and swimming. Variable-thickness high-buoyancy cells hug dog's torso for streamlined fit. Floatation is positioned low on the body to keep dog on the surface in a natural horizontal swimming position. The low-profile handle reduces snagging while enabling owners to lift dogs safely.
Why did people never think of this before, canoeing or boating, dog fall out, falls over board, what do you do? Ever try and get a dog out of the water? You will end up looking like you ran through a briar bush 7 times. It is safety for both of us
How does the dog react? The cool thing is, the dog didn't even mind putting it on, which I found surprising. As far as testing goes, it was kind of hard with out putting the dog in a life-threatening situation, but we did take her to the lake quite a few times, let her swim in a lot, and she had no problems with the range of motion. In the shallow water, we tried to push her down (just a little) and the vest held her up like a champ. Dry land test, were able to pick her up by the handle on the back (take my word for this one, as most dogs will not like it). The Velcro held nice and snug, there was a good overlap of it.
Over all, if your dog is as important to you as mine is to me, worth the cash. You never know what might happen out on the water.
If buying one though, make sure you get the right size. Ruff Wear has pretty good charts for sizing items.
