Northwave Hydrogen Mountain Bike Show

This mountain bike shoe is available in a tame (for an Italian shoe) silver, black, and blue color combo. Three velcro straps and a sturdy plastic heel cup with double stitching in the needed areas round out first appearances. Most of the top is black mesh for a cooler shoe and synthetic upper for durability. The initial fit is definitely unyielding especially through the tongue. After a few rides they became more comfortable. The heel cup is one of the best I have used, very supportive without binding your ankle. The insole is pretty standard, not enough of an arch for my taste but at least it was perforated for a cooler feel. The sole of the shoe is attached at the heel with the "PWR frame link" a carbon reinforcement that seems to end at the ball of the foot. This is a stiff shoe especially for a mountain shoe. Thankfully the toe does have a little give so the heel won't pull away too much when you must walk/run. At the toe there are two plastic toe studs installed, giving you the ability to throw in some big studs for cyclocross or muddy winter conditions. The lug design is pretty tame which helps quick pedal engagement but for mud it could be a little more rugged. Installing the cleat was pretty easy. Personally, I use Speedplay Frog pedals and the cleat is very wide, the fit was very snug but I didn't have to trim any rubber away so I assume more cleats will fit. Inside the shoe access to the cleat is not available, but it seemed if the thread ever stripped inside the shoe, the foot bed is etched right around the cleat. This means you don't need to toss the shoe in the trash just for stripped threads.

The testing period for these shoes was just a couple of months. It's hard to say something is durable that quickly but these shoes are tough, highly desirable for mountain bike use. Durability may mean more material and these shoes do seem a little heavy. The three straps give a snug and adjustable fit without the worry of breaking a buckle on a rock. Sizing is available from 36-47 with half sizes from 39-46.
